Not really radio but found these and they just have to carry on living...

I had been running the server from July 1995 to May 1998 (whilst I was studying for PhD in Cambridge University).

This was from June 1997 when I was running a web server with a camera in the lab probably one of the earliest ones in UK

a

Then a bit later..

"The small square box in the centre of the image with two knobs is the whole system pressure gauge.
When that reaches 0.000001 torr I start work. As I am in this picture !!!"

Animated gifs were all the rage back then....

Not amateur radio directly but if you need to travel and pay for stuff remote then it is...

Paying a deposit into a foreign bank account from UK one for a deposit for a place to rent for a DX op in 2016...

It's 21st Century and the whole world is connected so should be simple right and not cost the earth :-)

... no chance $%£&^%^$! bloody UK banks have seen to that.

I ended up using these guys http://transferwise.com

Be careful though as amounts you transfer are not protected as they are through 'normal' UK/EU/US bank account 'protection' schemes.

Better than sending cash via Western Union though although if you know and trust the other party that works (I've used it for years and not had a problem).

Asked.....

The motor bike batteries 7AH were obtained from Cycles Express... they are near the Westfield Junction round about extreme end of Kairba Avenvue AWAY from the tourist hotels.

I'll add a scan of the receipt here....

each was 800 dalasi so 1600 total (it was 60 to the pound so about £12 each) and they powered almost all operation... and laptop via a 75W inverter. I recharged them from a 12V 3A wall wart (eBay) into a peak-pro smart charger and the batteries were recharged at 0.9A max overnight.

The taxi driver that took me all over, (they all try to give you a card BTW) and the air maroc luggage thingy...

 Mainland QSO's

IOTA AF-060 QSO's

I had a load of 6W requests (2012 trip!) just arrived so arranged a reprint as well. I'm not in CDXC any more though (I resigned).

C5 QSL cards are here from FDS... will start going out.

I'll be going through all the direct, buro and club log (direct and buro) cards first then will go through the remaining IOTA AF-060 (2015) which will go via BURO then all the other main land ones, I will send the BERU contest ones last. Then all the 2014 cards not sent out already will go out.

Please note I will NOT upload anything to LoTW for a while... if you want need a confirmation then use club log and order a card, will probably be quicker. IOTA AF-060 only real cards count anyway for IOTA awards .... go figure.

Donations ARE accepted as this has cost me a lot more than I have had in so far.

All cards will be being HAND written and I will cross check with my own logs if was a buro or direct request (I also have audio files if any qso is in question) ... unlike SM7 or KH8 IOTA trips no direct $20 qsl card requests yet with no qso in the log :-)

PSU voltage drop on feeder cable to rig

Just posted to Elecraft list... so in case asked:

HOW TO CALCULATE VOLTAGE DROP AND ENERGY LOSSES IN A WIRE?

VOLTAGE DROP

Voltage drop is given by the following formula :

Voltage Drop
Where :

U : Voltage of the DC or AC system (V)
NB: for DC voltage drop in photovoltaic system, the voltage of the system is U = Umpp of one panel x number of panels in a serie.
ΔU : voltage drop in Volt (V)
b : lenght cable factor, b=2 for single phase wiring, b=1 for three-phased wiring.
ρ1 : resistivity of the material conductor, 0.023 for copper and 0.037 for aluminium (ambiant temperature = 25°C) in ohm.mm²/m.
L : simple lenght of the cable (distance between the source and the appliance), in meters (m).
S : cross section of the cable in mm²
Cos φ : power factor, Cos φ = 1 for pure resistive load, Cos φ< 1 for inductive charge, (usually 0.8).
λ : reactance per lenght unit (default value 0.00008 ohm/m)
Sin φ : sinus (acos(cos φ)).
Ib : current in Ampere (A)

NB : For DC circuit, cos φ=1, so sin φ=0.

Voltage drop in percent :
                                ΔU(%) = 100 x ΔU/U0
Where :

ΔU : voltage drop in V
U0 : voltage between phase and neutral (example : 230 V in 3-phase 400 V system)

At last can get at the workbench so will grab some build projects.

Had builders in (new bathrooms) and in my absence they took over the workshop as a store for all their gear so I have not been able to get near the workbench. Stuff has moved and so will have a 24 hr period when nothing being added so looks like will manage to grab stuff I need to finish off a K2 I have had for a bit. Means reversing the the no work in the shack rule but needs must. Got the Mh2 mike and 6BTV is up so should be able to test it.

I also have to do a rig review, when/if that turns up, for RadCom.

mcHF
bits all here too and want to get on with that and a UHFSDR
rig I had started ages ago as I have 146MHz NoV and summer would be great time to look at it.

SM7UCZ and I (visited last month) were brain storming a KRAS (Kalmar Radio Soc) Field Day project based on those cheap garden solar lights you see in most garden centres, some wood (Sweden has loads of that, drawing pips and some GQRP sales provided parts.

The beacon and TX bit is working (SM7UCZ did that) I ordered some ultra cheap eBay Arduino modules, that have arrived, to add temp, pressure etc to a beacon signal so I need some time to look at that code.

The PIC-A-STAR builds are taking a serious back seat now so will need to rethink will I keep them.

The solar panel M1KTA's QRP ham radio blog: Tested the solar panels based portable 140W PA been putting together for use with one of the Camb-Hams on a possible DX trip is on hold as the DXCC is not going to happen this year or next maybe (war zone!).

The Optical Transceiver, parts and hardware I think I'll sell as a whole at Rishworth (LEDs) as doesn't look like going to build it up.

And trying to find a new job too and into the endless round of emails, telephone calls and travel to interviews and/or Skype call after Skype call but I'm sure something will fall into place soon ... feels a lot harder to find work as an IT geek these days.

RSGB IOTA 2015 EU138 Flakskär

$

I will be on Flakskär  24-25-26 July. Locator JO76ub

It is an island (what else?) in group EU-138 (so not hyper rare) and I have short call SD7B.

Flakskär  has no water or power so I'll be taking everything with me. I have a 100W solar panel setup I would like to use so I will probably be driving from UK, with it plus all the radio kit about 900 miles going via tunnel but might fly, yet to be determined.

See here for what the island is like (in swedish but lots of photos)

Yes I have asked for 5MHz, expect will have 6m and there will be a qrss/wspr beacon too.
I've also got the workshop back (yipee!).... however, lots of cleaning up to do as I have plaster and brick dust on everything. All components and builds were safely away but all the surfaces have a coating. Once that is done I'll be building again (someone else's K2 to finish first).

Workshop almost clear of the old builders rubbish.

$

Now got to clean all the surfaces and rehome the bikes (new shed needed) and get rid of some last bits and the workshop is back to original use again.

Lots of wood offcuts and old carpet roll and underlay too. The old garage door will have a stud wall built over it and a new table/desk will go infront as wife's craft room comes out here too. (AND not going to be used for building bits storage again!)

Located the boxes of the cobweb and other antennas so they will go up/out when finished as well.

Nice 2m length of network cabinet tray as well.... maybe that could be cut into pieces and used as the cover over PSU and dummy loads.

Vacuum Capacitor

$

0
Whilst clearing out some of the boxes in the workshop so I can get back to work I discovered a vacuum variable (8" long 3" diameter) I had kept from PhD days (1993-96). The original use I had was a planned magnetic loop (using two joined lengths of 22mm copper pipe (about 6.2m long) just one join using silver solder, to keep the loop resistance down) with a 2m diameter.

Bit like this one (no photo right now)

The capacitor would go across the gap in the loop.
a

The feed point was using an FT240 torrid (-43 I think) with 3 turns to an N type, the copper pipe would have slid through this.

The feed point is at the top of the loop, which sits at a slight angle to the vertical. The capacitor was to be in a length of 4" soil pipe, supported on an old 1/2" thick white chopping board.

The capacitor would be tuned remotely using a spare (NEMA17) stepper motor and a reduction planetary drive from a CNC project.

The loop should have been usable 3.5MHz right up to 21MHz.

However ... capacitors with clear glass envelopes and copper electrodes, if there is any air ingress you will see discolouration of the copper about the electrodes, slowly at first and depending on how humid it will completely darken and discolour. Originally the insides were all shinny, now they are dark so I expect the envelope has been damaged.

When I was a PhD research student in the Chemistry department in Cambridge University the gas handling line I used was maintained by the department glass blowers and I had accurate vacuum pumps. Given this I am pretty sure I could at one point have 'fixed' the capacitor and that was the plan, to glass blow on a small tube to attach to a line, then heat the capacitor whilst pumping down the interior and then to seal it again.

Now you can pretty much assume the pressure inside is at atmospheric not fractions of what it was originally probably near total vacuum.

I know that capacitors at atmospheric pressure (760 Torr, 1.01 Bar) have a voltage rating about 12-15 times lower plate spacing dependant than that of an otherwise identical vacuum capacitor (at 10-7 Torr). How do I know this... well lets just say during research if a capacitor failed I'd know about it damned quick. We used a thyratron pulse across a flash lamp at 5Hz and used a bank of vacuum storage capacitors. The voltage was up to 15KV. If one ever failed then audibly as the experiment ran it was like a fizzing as it shorted and the main flash lamp never fired. We used to have a selection of new 'spares' that we'd swap in. I never asked where they came from I think we had an Eastern European post doc in one of the other groups and they had 'acquired them', I never asked or where they went after we finished with them, several researchers before me had often throw them away (such a waste). Used to go through about 2 or 3 a year.

I might just use it in an ATU where the high voltage doesn't matter so much as the capacitance is fine and it requires multi turns 10-470pF.

Back to cleaning up....

Was asked what the drive is.... 976 miles.... via the channel tunnel. Pass where I used to work in Belgium and then on through Holland, Germany and Demark then Sweden.

Will stop somewhere mid trip, and probably an IOTA once in Denmark too.
